Tell everyone who is discouraged, be strong and don’t be afraid! God is coming to your rescue’ – Isaiah 35:4
NOKUBUNGA QAMPI, described by her community as “Lion Mama” is a mother who made a decision one fateful day which would change her life and the life of her daughter forever. When Nokubunga received a call that her daughter was in danger at her home, she left everything and ran to her daughter’s aid. Upon arrival, Nokubunga saw three men hovering over her daughter with their trousers around their ankles ready to pounce on her daughter. When they saw her, they charged at her and she defended herself leaving one man dead and the other two seriously injured. Her story is one of pain and sacrifice and as we celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday, are you a mother struggling in a battle? Are you desperately trying to defend yourself?
It can be argued that since the beginning of time, women have been placed in a low position. We live in a society which is constantly enabling a system that pushes women to the back. We live in a world which looks down on the progress of women, but while this may be so, we serve a God who not only sees the power of women, but places them on high. A woman who was rejected and ejected from her home and all that she knew was Hagar. Hagar is introduced to us in Genesis as Abraham’s second wife given to him by his first wife Sarah for the purpose of giving him a child as she was too old. Hagar a handmaid did as she was told and became Abraham’s second wife and became pregnant. Tensions between the two women boiled out of control. Hagar endured insults, criticism, dejection and so much more because of this one decision which changed her life.
Hagar found herself in a battle. She was constantly defending herself, but one day it all came to a head. Hagar was cast out of her home and she found herself alone and stranded in the desert with her son. “I cannot watch the boy die” she said as she hid him in some bushes. Feeling depressed and unwanted, she began to sob. Just then an Angel of God appeared saying, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” (Genesis 21:17).
You see in life we all make decisions. Some decisions can seem to have consequences which can last for a lifetime. But God has heard your cry, and is coming to your rescue. You might be a mother who feels trapped in a situation though not as grave as Nokubunga’s, and seems to be affecting every step you take. You might a single mother who is struggling to hold it all together etc. Whatever situation you find yourself in, just like Hagar, God has heard you.
So this week, prepare your victory dance, for God is about to place you on higher ground.
