“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

The United States and Iran have recently been locked in a tense nuclear standoff that could easily transition into a full-blown conflict. Iran has been subjected to crushing economic sanctions that have crimped its economy and put pressure on its politicians and leaders. But instead of wilting, Iran has responded with increasingly provocative moves—sabotaging several oil tankers and shooting down a U.S. drones.

These events might seem far-flung from where you live but let’s not forget that prior to World War II such tensions in Europe spilled over into the U.S. and Japan and millions upon millions found themselves in trouble and died. (This is not to say that these current tensions will turn into a world war.)

Now, you’re troubles might not be on such a large scale to the average person – but to you it might seem like the biggest mountain you’ve ever faced. However, not long before he was about to be handed over to be put to death, Jesus told his disciples that ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father.” This left them grieved. But then Jesus went further and said that each of them would be scattered.

But he encouraged them that “I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.” (John 16:33 CEV)

So yes – you might be on the verge of losing your job, failing your exams or in the midst of mounting financial bills. But be at peace and take heart because your saviour has overcome the world!
